Norwich Airport was forced to shut down suddenly this afternoon after a light aircraft suffered a landing incident, leading to urgent cancellations and diversions of flights.
Emergency services, including fire and ambulance crews, rushed to the scene after the aircraft’s undercarriage collapsed during its landing at around 1:48pm. Two people were on board the light aircraft but were removed safely and without injury, officials confirmed.
A spokesperson for Norwich Airport said:
“At 1.48pm today, a light aircraft with two people on board diverted to Norwich Airport with a reported undercarriage issue. Upon landing, the undercarriage collapsed. Fire and ambulance services attended and the two people were removed from the aircraft without injury.
As a result of the incident, the airport’s runway was immediately closed and is expected to remain out of action until at least 5pm while recovery operations take place.
Several flights have already been impacted:
- An inbound TUI flight from Tenerife was diverted to London Stansted Airport.
- A KLM flight scheduled to depart for Amsterdam at 2.05pm was cancelled.
Passengers are being advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on their flights. Norwich Airport has said further updates will be issued soon.
The sudden shutdown comes amid a busy weekend of travel, and authorities are working to minimise disruption where possible.
