Hydrogen and Chlorine Gas Leak Sparks Evacuation at Albany Leisure Centre in Enfield

Albany Leisure Centre on Hertford Road, Enfield, hass been evacuated this afternoon following a hazardous gas leak in the building’s plant room.

Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a hydrogen and chlorine gas leak at the centre, located on Hertford Road, shortly before midday. Staff immediately began evacuating the premises to ensure the safety of visitors and employees.

Hydrogen and chlorine gases are both hazardous when inhaled, with chlorine particularly capable of causing severe respiratory distress at high concentrations.

Access to Albany Pool and surrounding areas was temporarily restricted while crews ventilated the building and monitored air quality. London Ambulance Service and Met Police were also in attendance as a precaution.

Enfield Council has advised residents to avoid the area while emergency teams work to make the site safe.

The cause of the leak is currently under investigation, and Albany Leisure Centre will remain closed until further notice.
