Police Seize Dog as Investigation Continues

A 19-year-old woman has died following a dog attack inside a flat in Cobhorn Drive, Bristol, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to the property at 7:19 PM on Wednesday, February 26, after receiving a report from the ambulance service. Despite their efforts, the woman tragically died at the scene.

Two People Arrested

Avon and Somerset Police have arrested two people—a man and a woman, both in their 20s—on suspicion of offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act, including possession of a prohibited breed. They remain in police custody as investigations continue.

Initial reports suggest the dog involved may be an XL Bully, though police say confirming the breed will form part of their investigation.

Dog Seized and Sedated

Officers attending the scene sedated and seized the dog, which is now in police custody.

Police Appeal for Information

Neighbourhood Inspector Terry Murphy said:

A full investigation is now well underway to establish the full circumstances of the events that led to her death.

He added that Cobhorn Drive was temporarily closed as part of the investigation and thanked the public for their patience.

Increased Police Presence

Residents in the area will notice an increased police presence in the coming days. Officers are encouraging anyone with concerns to speak to them.

XL Bully Ban and Dangerous Dogs Act

Since February 2024, it has been a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales without an exemption certificate. Owners must:

  • Neuter and microchip their dogs
  • Keep them muzzled and on a lead in public
  • Follow strict conditions to legally keep the breed

The UK government introduced the ban following a series of fatal attacks involving the breed.

Public Appeal

Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or ownership of the dog to come forward.
