The old air traffic control tower at Charlotte Douglas International Airport caught fire during its demolition on Wednesday, causing a brief but tense situation for the construction crew on site.
The fire broke out in the afternoon as workers were dismantling the decades-old structure. Flames quickly engulfed parts of the tower, trapping four construction workers inside. Fortunately, the workers managed to escape on their own and were uninjured.
Emergency services were promptly alerted, and fire crews rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
A spokesperson for Charlotte Douglas International Airport said: “We are relieved that no one was injured during this incident. The safety of all personnel is our top priority, and we are cooperating fully with the fire department’s investigation into the cause of the fire.
The demolition of the old control tower is part of a larger modernization project at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, aimed at improving infrastructure and enhancing passenger experience.
