In a shocking incident that unfolded on Garret Hostel Lane in Cambridge, a 24-year-old e-bike rider has been sentenced to 27 months in jail for assaulting a man who confronted him about his reckless behavior. The incident occurred on 7 August last year when Raeqwon Rhodes was riding alongside two friends at high speed, reportedly swerving dangerously in and out of pedestrians.
Eyewitnesses recall the heart-stopping moment when Rhodes nearly collided with a young child, prompting a concerned mother to step forward and challenge his hazardous actions. Instead of showing remorse or apologizing, Rhodes responded aggressively and shouted at the mother before swiftly pedaling away.
Shortly after that, Rhodes carelessly brushed past a woman walking with her husband. The husband, a man in his 40s, could not stand idly by and decided to confront Rhodes about his dangerous riding. A heated argument ensued between the two, which took a violent turn when Rhodes delivered a forceful punch to the man’s left eyebrow. The assault resulted in the victim’s glasses breaking and a deep cut on his face.
Rhodes and his friends quickly made their escape, leaving the injured man and his wife in shock. The victim’s wife promptly drove her husband to the hospital for immediate medical attention.
During the court proceedings at Cambridge Crown Court on Thursday, 12 October, Rhodes pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm. The judge, taking into account Rhodes’ previous suspended sentence order, decided to activate it and sentenced him to a total of 27 months in jail.
DC Leah Beckett, the investigating officer, expressed her relief that no one was seriously hurt as a result of Rhodes’ reckless behavior. She also highlighted the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. “Rhodes’ behavior that day started by riding his e-bike irresponsibly and then escalated to attacking someone who understandably challenged his actions,” she said. “It was fortunate he did not collide with the young child and that nobody was more seriously injured. He clearly struggled to control his temper, and I hope this time in jail will help him reflect on that.”
