Sunbury Lock Search for Missing Rower Enters Sixth Day as Rowing Club ‘Devastated’

The search for a missing man in his 60s, whose rowing boat capsized on the River Thames, has now entered its sixth day. The tragic incident occurred on Friday, October 11, near Sunbury Lock, Surrey, when a group from Weybridge Rowing Club set out on the water.

Emergency services, including police and rescue teams, were called to the scene around 8.50am, where five individuals were rescued. However, one man remains missing. The fast-flowing nature of the river has made the search challenging, and efforts have since been expanded to cover a wider area. Surrey Police have confirmed that they will maintain a visible presence in the area throughout the week.

The missing man’s family is being supported by a specialist officer, and his identity has not yet been made public, at the request of his loved ones.

Weybridge Rowing Club has expressed its devastation in a statement, saying: “We are grateful that the other crew members and a member of the public who came to assist are safe. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the friends and families of those affected.

The club also extended heartfelt thanks to the members of the public who helped during the incident and to those offering supportive messages from other rowing clubs and river users.

Three of the five people rescued were taken to hospital for checks. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the capsizing, though at this stage, police have ruled out any suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement.

Surrey Police have asked anyone with footage or information about the incident to contact them quoting PR/45240116388.

As the search continues, the rowing community and local residents remain hopeful for closure, with tributes and support pouring in for the missing man and his family.
