Man jailed for 33 month following road rage assault in Portchester

A 34 year-old man from Portchester has been jailed for 33 months following a road rage assault where a 66 year-old man was repeatedly hit on the head with a metal steering lock. Malcolm Dutton of Wagtail Way in Portchester admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent at Portsmouth Crown court on March 1. He was sentenced to 33 months in prison for the offence at the same court on Thursday, March 24. The court heard that the assault took place on Wagtail Way shortly before 5pm on August 28, 2015, following a driver dispute on the A27 between Fareham and Portchester. Dutton approached the victim’s vehicle and then assaulted him, leaving the victim with injuries to his head which required hospital treatment. The victim is now recovering from his injuries at home. Steering lock used in the assault.Investigating officer DC Duncan Green said: “This was a particularly nasty attack with a weapon that was totally unprovoked. I’m pleased that the sentence reflects the seriousness with which the courts take this kind of assault, which was extremely traumatic for the victim. “I’d also like thank the intervention of two witnesses who prevented the victim’s injuries from being more serious. “Quite simply this kind of ‘road rage’ behaviour will not be tolerated. This case sends a clear message that we will investigate and prosecute anyone who is involved in this kind of serious incident”.
