On Sunday, July 24, police were called around 12:35 a.m. to reports of shots fired in Cheney Row Park off Durban Road in E17.
Officers and ambulance personnel responded to the scene. Cordons were set up, and a crime scene was secured.
Two people self-presented at an east London hospital a short time later.
One of the men, a 28-year-old man with critical gunshot wounds, died a short time later in the hospital.
His family has been notified, and he will be assisted by specialist officers. In due course, a post-mortem examination and formal identification will be scheduled.
The second man, in his 30s, was released from the hospital after being stabbed. He was arrested in connection with the incident and is being held at a police station in London.
DCI Kelly Allen of Specialist Crime leads the Met’s murder investigation. My heart goes out to the family of the man who has lost his life in this reckless act of violence,” DCI Allen said. “I can assure them of my complete commitment, as well as that of my team, to ensuring that they receive justice.” At the time of the shooting, I believe there were 50 to 100 people gathered in and around Cheney Row Park, with music playing. I urgently need to speak with everyone who was present at that event – even if you don’t think you saw anything significant, you must come forward and speak with officers.” We need to see the footage and images that were captured during the event. Please save all such material; we will provide a link for it to be uploaded shortly.” Anyone debating whether or not to report a crime should put themselves in the shoes of the victim’s bereaved mother and father this morning. They are entitled to answers.” And whoever brought a gun to this gathering does not deserve your protection, nor do they deserve to be free to cause more harm to others. Please do the right thing and contact me as soon as possible.”
Anyone with information or witnesses who have yet to speak with police is asked to call 101 and reference 267/24july.
If you do not want to speak with the police, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 and remain anonymous. They never ask for your name, and they can’t track your call, IP address, or device.
This is a tragic incident and a senseless loss of life,” said Chief Superintendent Simon Crick, who leads policing in Waltham Forest. “At this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family.” I also understand the local community’s concerns about this incident.
“I’d like to reassure residents that local officers will be on hand to provide reassurance and a visible presence.” If you have any concerns, your officers will be available to discuss them with you.”
