London Underground drivers, represented by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (Aslef), have announced strike action for July 26 and 28 as part of an ongoing dispute over pensions and working conditions. This strike coincides with industrial action planned by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT).
Finn Brennan, Aslef’s full-time organizer on London Underground, stated that the decision to strike was necessary due to the determination of London Underground management to implement detrimental changes despite opposition from trade unions. Brennan criticized the management’s plan to introduce a new attendance procedure, which would remove the right to representation or appeal at the disciplinary process’s initial stage and extend the length of warnings.
Additionally, the management’s proposals for “train modernisation” include unrestricted remote booking on and off, longer driving shifts of up to 10 hours, flexible cover weeks in every roster, and the scrapping of fixed links. According to Brennan, these changes would negatively impact the ability of Tube train drivers to organize their personal lives outside of work and disrupt the change-over system. He argued that these proposals aim to create an entirely flexible workforce, leading to the elimination of more jobs and increased workloads for remaining staff.
Aslef’s decision to strike reflects their commitment to protecting pensions, working conditions, and existing agreements for their members. The announcement comes in the wake of ongoing negotiations with London Underground management, which have not yielded satisfactory outcomes.
In a similar dispute, RMT members will also be taking action from July 23 to July 28, with strike or walkout action planned every day except Monday, July 24.
The strikes by both Aslef and RMT members raise concerns about potential disruptions to London Underground services and the impact on commuters. As the strike dates approach, commuters are advised to stay informed about any developments and seek alternative transportation options if necessary.
