Tolworth Sports Pavilion Fire: 60 Firefighters Tackle Major Blaze in Chessington
A large fire broke out at a sports pavilion on Jubilee Way in Chessington this afternoon, prompting a significant emergency response involving eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters.
The London Fire Brigade said they received the first of 54 emergency calls at 4:54pm, with Control Officers immediately mobilising crews from Kingston, Wimbledon, Surbiton, and surrounding stations.
Sports Pavilion Engulfed
The blaze took hold of most of a single-storey sports pavilion, sending thick smoke across the area. The fire was brought under control by 7:09pm, but firefighters remained on site for damping down and investigation work.
Smoke Warning to Residents
Residents living nearby were urged to close their windows and doors due to the significant volume of smoke drifting from the scene. Emergency services have also advised the public to continue avoiding the area while investigations continue.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:
“Crews worked quickly and effectively in very challenging conditions to stop the fire from spreading further. We thank the public for their cooperation in keeping the area clear for our teams.”
Cause Under Investigation
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and remains under investigation by fire officers.
No injuries have been reported at this stage.
