Younger Workers Struggle with Loneliness and Lack of Appreciation in the Workplace, Survey Finds

A recent survey conducted by the American Psychological Association sheds light on the challenges faced by younger workers in today’s evolving workplace. The 2024 Work in America survey, conducted online by The Harris Poll, gathered insights from over 2,000 working U.S. adults, revealing significant disparities in experiences across different age groups.

Key Findings:

  1. Age Bias and Value Perception:
    • Three in 10 U.S. workers reported that colleagues who are not close to their age do not appreciate the value of their ideas (32%).
    • Younger workers (aged 18-25) faced this issue more acutely, with 48% feeling undervalued compared to only 16% of workers aged 65 and older.
    • Workers aged 18-25 and 26-43 were significantly more comfortable working with peers their own age (62% and 57%, respectively) than with other age groups (42%, 38%, and 27%).
  2. Loneliness and Stress:
    • Nearly half (45%) of workers aged 18-25 reported feeling lonely during work, significantly higher than older age groups.
    • Younger workers also experienced higher stress levels during their workday (48% aged 18-25, 51% aged 26-43, and 42% aged 44-57).
  3. Job Security and Age Self-Consciousness:
    • A quarter of respondents worried about job security due to their age.
    • Almost 30% of U.S. workers felt self-conscious about their age at work, including 43% of workers aged 18-25.
  4. Work Arrangements:
    • One-third of U.S. workers lacked control over when, where, and how they worked.
    • Only 38% preferred working exclusively in person, while 34% preferred a hybrid model, and 28% preferred remote work.
  5. AI and Burnout:
    • Employees’ use of AI outpaced employer guidance, with 35% using AI monthly or more often.
    • Workplace burnout affected 67% of workers, leading to lack of interest, motivation, and energy.

Insights and Recommendations:

Dr. Arthur C. Evans Jr., APA’s chief executive officer, emphasised the need for employers to adapt to changing demographics and evolving work norms. He stated, “To remain competitive, employers should invest in strategies that support workers’ well-being and mental health.”

As the workplace landscape continues to shift, addressing age-related challenges and fostering meaningful connections among coworkers will be crucial for organisations seeking to thrive in the future.
