Two Virgin Australia airline crew members were reportedly victims of a robbery and sexual assault while on a layover in Nadi, Fiji, on New Year’s Day.
Incident Details
The crew members, a man and a woman, had been celebrating New Year’s Eve at Bar One nightclub in Nadi, a popular tourist destination on Fiji’s main island. The alleged incidents occurred in the early hours of January 1 as they left the venue to return to their hotel.
Fiji Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed the events:
Unfortunately, two of the crew members were victims of an alleged theft and rape after exiting the nightclub trying to find their way back to the hotel.
The male crew member reportedly suffered facial injuries during the robbery, while the female crew member was allegedly sexually assaulted. Both victims are now staying at their hotel and receiving support.
Investigation and Support Efforts
Fijian authorities have launched a full investigation, and a suspect linked to the sexual assault has been identified and questioned. Assistant Police Commissioner Mesake Waqa confirmed the two incidents involved separate perpetrators.
Virgin Australia has dispatched support personnel to assist the affected crew members. A spokesperson for the airline stated:
“Our focus is on the wellbeing of our team members affected.”
Response from Officials
Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism, Viliame R Gavoka, expressed his concerns over the incidents, stating:
Our thoughts and concerns are with them and for their health and well-being. These alleged incidents are regrettable.”
Gavoka urged tourists to exercise caution in nightclub areas and late at night.
Broader Implications
The Flight Attendants’ Association of Australia’s federal secretary, Teri O’Toole, called the incidents “very disturbing,” highlighting that while such occurrences are rare, they are not unprecedented.
Next Steps
Three other Virgin Australia crew members remain in Fiji to assist with the investigation. All are expected to return to Australia by the end of the week.
The male victim received hospital treatment for his injuries, and both victims are reportedly in stable condition. Virgin Australia and Fijian authorities are continuing their cooperation to ensure a thorough investigation.
