Travel Alert: Holidaymakers Face New Airport Rules This Summer
Gatwick’s Summer Schedule: 223 Destinations from 56 Airlines

As the summer travel season heats up, holidaymakers flying with major airlines such as Jet2, Ryanair, EasyJet, and TUI are advised to familiarise themselves with a slew of updated airport rules and regulations. Recent changes at various airports have led to potential confusion over what can and cannot be carried on flights.

Research conducted by Haypp has identified some of the most commonly misunderstood packing regulations that have led to delays and even missed flights for British travellers. Here are the essentials every traveller should know:

Vapes and E-cigarettes: Travelers must pack all vape devices and e-cigarettes in carry-on luggage only, adhering to a limit of 20 batteries. Similarly, e-liquid refills must also be carried in hand luggage, with each container not exceeding 100ml. Due to the risk posed by lithium batteries, these items are prohibited in checked baggage and could be confiscated at security checkpoints.

Electrical Devices: Large electrical items such as laptops and hairdryers must be removed from hand luggage and placed in a separate screening tray during security checks. For those flying to the USA, ensure that all electronic devices are charged and can be powered on upon request.

Food Items: Contrary to common misconceptions, passengers are allowed to bring their own solid foods like sandwiches and snacks through security. However, spreadable foods such as jams or hummus count towards liquid allowances and are generally not permitted. Be aware of destination-specific customs regulations that might require you to consume or discard certain foods upon arrival.

Hair Dye: Travelers planning to refresh their hair colour upon landing should think ahead, as hair dye is banned from aircraft due to its hazardous chemical content. It’s advisable to schedule any hair appointments before departure.

Liquids: Significant changes have been implemented at select UK airports including Birmingham, Bristol, Teesside, London City, Aberdeen, and Leeds Bradford. At these locations, passengers no longer need to remove electronics or liquids from their bags at security gates. Moreover, the liquid allowance has been increased from 100ml to two litres, streamlining the screening process.

For those travelling with infants under three years old, milk or water is permitted through security, ensuring that young travellers are well catered for during the flight.

Holidaymakers are encouraged to check the latest airport and airline guidelines before travelling to ensure a smooth and stress-free start to their vacations.
