Sunderland Fan Pleads Guilty After Mocking Death of Young Mascot; Bradley Lowery’s Mum Thanks Supporters
Arrests Made After Alleged Mockery Of Deceased Child At Football Match

A man who mocked Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery on Friday during the Black Cats’ 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday could be facing jail, Dale Houghton, 31, pleaded guilty to a public order offence.

Gemma Lowery, Bradley’s mother, expressed gratitude to South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club for their swift response and condemned the act. In a statement, she emphasised that childhood cancer should never be a subject of mockery.

“I hope that this is a lesson to everyone that childhood cancer is no joke,” Gemma Lowery said. She urged people to focus on the strength and courage her son displayed during his six years, rather than dwelling on the actions of a small minority.

Despite the unfortunate incident, Sheffield Wednesday fans rallied in support. A fundraiser launched by the fans has already raised over £18,000 for The Bradley Lowery Foundation. Gemma Lowery appreciated the outpouring of support, aiming to put the incident behind and continue the foundation’s impactful work.
