Storm Henk Unleashes Havoc Across the UK: Amber Wind Warning in Effect

A powerful storm named Storm Henk is currently wreaking havoc across a substantial part of the United Kingdom, bringing with it high winds and heavy rainfall. The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for southern England, the Midlands, East Anglia, and Wales until 8pm, cautioning residents about travel disruptions, potential roof damage, and the risk of power outages.

Gusts of up to 80mph are anticipated, particularly around the Bristol Channel, with inland areas expecting winds of up to 60mph. In addition to the powerful winds, heavy rain is forecasted to sweep across most of England and Wales, compounding the weather challenges.

Rail operators are strongly urging passengers to reconsider unnecessary travel plans. Thameslink has reported “multiple weather-related incidents across the entire network,” leading to disruptions of up to 90 minutes for passengers. South Western Railway (SWR) has gone a step further, advising people not to travel on its network due to widespread disruption caused by Storm Henk. SWR is offering customers the option to book taxis for essential travel and claim refunds with proof of tickets, receipts, and contact details.

The Energy Networks Association has reported that approximately 8,900 homes, primarily located in the South West of England, are currently without power due to the impact of Storm Henk.

As a precautionary measure, the Dartford Crossing southbound bridge has been closed to drivers due to excessively strong winds. National Highways has announced the utilization of a tunnel for southbound traffic, though delays of up to two hours are reported on the approach to the crossing.

Great Western Railway is experiencing disruptions, with fallen trees blocking lines between Dicot Parkway and Oxford. Severe weather conditions have also led to line closures between Reading and Basingstoke, resulting in cancellations, delays, and the suspension of services between these stations.

Given the adverse weather conditions and travel disruptions, Thameslink, South Western Railway, and Southern Railway services are all advising against travel. As Storm Henk continues to batter the UK, residents and travelers are strongly urged to stay updated on weather alerts and exercise extreme caution during this tumultuous period.
