Residents in Kos and Chios Evacuated After Wildfires

Residents and holidaymakers have been fleeing for their lives after wildfires took hold of the Greek islands of Kos and Chios.

On Monday wildfires described as tinderboxes meant thousands fleeing the area as the sky was covered in smoke.

More than 100 firefighters including 11 aircraft and five helicopters joined the fight with fires affecting areas near the capital of Athens.

Greece has had to prepare more this year than previous years with a dry winter, the summer is expected to be more prone to fires.

In 2023 more than 20 people died and 19.000 were forced to flee after fires to hold hold of the country.
