A post box in Dartford has become the latest canvas for unauthorized artwork, as it was recently adorned with the colours of the Union Jack flag. This incident marks the latest development in a series of what authorities have described as “criminal damage” across the borough.
In the span of a week, between January 31 and February 5, a total of 26 post boxes were painted gold, with the majority of the incidents concentrated in the Temple Hill area. Despite efforts by Royal Mail to repaint the boxes back to their traditional red hue, subsequent acts of vandalism have resulted in a variety of eye-catching designs.
Residents woke up on February 4 to find a post box on Farnol Road sporting a black and white pattern reminiscent of a cow print. Later, on February 19, the community was surprised to discover several boxes painted pink with gold splotches, resembling the iconic character Mr Blobby from the 90s British television show Noel’s House Party.
Notably, two post boxes adorned with the Mr. Blobby design were spotted in Temple Hill, adding a playful touch to the neighbourhood. Subsequent sightings included a post box on St Vincents Road painted in purple, gold, and red with the label ‘Creme Egg’ and, most recently, the appearance of a Union Jack patterned post box in Trevithick Drive on February 27.
Kent Police have been actively investigating the incidents, with a spokesperson confirming ongoing enquiries. A man was arrested on February 13 in connection with the initial post box painting incidents and has since been released on bail until May 4 pending further investigation.
The community response to the painted post boxes has been mixed, with some expressing appreciation for the vibrant makeovers while others decry the defacement of traditional postal symbols. Social media platforms have been abuzz with opinions, with one user praising the colourful transformations for bringing joy to the neighborhood, while another lamented the cost and inconvenience of rectifying the graffiti.
As authorities continue their efforts to address the incidents, residents remain vigilant, hoping to preserve the integrity of their community while navigating the unexpected bursts of colour adorning their streets.
