A pair of dedicated officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary have been nominated for the prestigious National Police Bravery Awards 2024 for their remarkable courage and exemplary decision-making during a harrowing encounter with a knife-wielding man on a rooftop.
On the evening of 16 March 2023, PC James Taylor, dedicated to his investigation into a dangerous drugs network, and PS Sarah-Jane Tucker, the local police sergeant in the Stroud area, responded to a call involving a violent adult male armed with a knife and a long metal object on the roof of a residential outbuilding.
Remaining composed and patient, PC Taylor skillfully negotiated with the aggressive individual, who posed a significant threat to both officers and the public. Despite the volatile situation, PC Taylor’s calm demeanour and effective communication skills helped prevent the man from escaping the rooftop and endangering others.
As the tense standoff unfolded, PC Taylor meticulously assessed the situation, recognizing the challenges posed by the man’s heavy clothing and limited vulnerability to a Taser deployment. With PS Tucker commanding and ensuring safety on the ground, PC Taylor made the critical decision to request firearms support.
Suddenly, the situation escalated further as the man leapt from the rooftop, brandishing a large knife and a builder’s heavy-duty spirit level. PC Taylor swiftly deployed his Taser, incapacitating the assailant and enabling his subsequent restraint by both officers.
Gloucestershire Police Federation Chair Stephen James commended the officers for their selfless bravery, emphasizing their pivotal role in safeguarding the public from harm. Chief Constable Rod Hansen expressed immense pride in PC Taylor and PS Tucker, highlighting their exceptional negotiation and decision-making skills that epitomize the force’s commitment to protecting communities.
The nomination of PC Taylor and PS Tucker for the Police Bravery Awards serves as a testament to their unwavering courage and dedication to duty, underscoring their vital role in ensuring public safety amidst perilous circumstances.
As their nomination is celebrated, the courageous actions of these officers stand as a testament to the resilience and bravery of Gloucestershire Constabulary in the face of danger.
