Police Arrest 24-Year-Old Man in Connection with Mitcham Murder Investigation

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal stabbing in Mitcham earlier this week.

At around 7.30pm on Monday (April 28), police were called to an address in Maple Close, off Oakleigh Way in the Eastfields area, after reports of a stabbing. A 39-year-old man was found with serious stab wounds and was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to hospital. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody after voluntarily attending a south London police station on Tuesday afternoon. He remains under investigation.

Local Community in Shock

Residents reported that the victim lived in Maple Close with his family and was known in the community. Witnesses say the stabbing followed an argument with a man who also frequented the area.

“In light of the incident, patrols are being stepped up in the local area to provide reassurance to residents,” a Met Police spokesperson said.

Murder Investigation Underway

Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell from Specialist Crime South, who is leading the investigation, said:

“The victim’s loved ones are being supported by specially trained officers. They have our deepest sympathies following this terrible loss.”

DCI Foxwell urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has any relevant information to contact police:

  • Call 101 quoting CAD 6812/28APR

  • To remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Appeal for Witnesses

Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have dashcam, doorbell, or CCTV footage from around Maple Close or Oakleigh Way around the time of the incident.

The victim has not yet been formally named. A post-mortem examination is expected to take place in the coming days.
