Staffordshire Police are urging the public to remain vigilant following two recent distraction thefts that occurred outside cash machines in Tamworth and Lichfield.
The first incident took place around 11:30 on October 25, when an elderly victim was followed by two men from a charity shop on Tamworth Street in Lichfield. One of the men then distracted the victim inside WHSmith on Bakers Lane and stole her purse.
The second incident occurred around 10:15 on October 30, when a man in his 70s was approached by an individual near Lloyds Bank on George Street in Tamworth. The suspect attempted to deceive the man by pretending he had dropped a £10 note, but fortunately, no possessions were stolen.
Both incidents involved similar methods of distraction, as the suspects used tactics such as pretending the victims had dropped money or other items to divert their attention. They then proceeded to steal wallets or purses, and subsequently attempted to withdraw money from nearby ATMs using the stolen cards.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and remain vigilant, particularly when using ATMs, inside banks, or anywhere else where PINs are utilised. If approached by someone near a cash machine, it is important to ensure that they are not attempting to distract you and to keep your valuables within sight.
Anyone with information relating to either theft is strongly encouraged to contact the authorities by calling 101 and quoting incident 687 of October 25.
