In a significant advancement for military technology, the British Army has announced a new deal to acquire state-of-the-art bomb disposal robots, providing enhanced protection for soldiers and the public alike.

The T4 bomb disposal robots, procured through a £21 million contract with L3 Harris Technologies, are set to revolutionize the Army’s capabilities in handling explosive threats and hazardous materials. With 50 units scheduled for delivery by the end of 2024, these robots will play a crucial role in neutralizing bombs and chemical threats across the country.

Equipped with cutting-edge features, the T4 robots are designed to navigate through narrow urban spaces, and tough terrains, and even climb stairs. Their adaptable manipulation arms and all-terrain treads enable them to operate in confined areas such as planes, trains, and buses, ensuring efficient disposal operations in diverse environments.

Advanced controls, high-definition cameras, and rapid data links empower operators to perform complex tasks remotely, including handling explosives and hazardous materials from a safe distance. This capability significantly reduces the risk to service personnel and civilians during disposal operations.

Minister for Defence Procurement, James Cartlidge, emphasized the importance of equipping the Armed Forces with the latest technology to address evolving threats. He highlighted the role of unmanned systems like the T4 in enhancing the safety and effectiveness of defence operations, as outlined in the Drone Defence Strategy.

Weighing just over 100kg, the compact size of the T4 robots enables swift deployment in emergency situations, with the ability to be transported in standard 4×4 vehicles. Despite their smaller stature compared to previous models, such as the T7 UGV, the T4s maintain advanced capabilities, including ‘advanced haptic feedback’ that allows operators to interact with devices remotely with precision.

The procurement of these bomb disposal robots underscores the commitment of the British Army to ensuring the safety and security of both military personnel and the general public. Major General Lizzie Faithfull-Davies of Defence Equipment and Support praised the collaborative efforts between industry partners and the project team in harnessing cutting-edge technology to address critical defence needs.

Ed Zoiss, President of Space and Airborne Systems at L3Harris, highlighted the T4 robots’ unparalleled capabilities in navigating crowded and challenging environments, reaffirming the commitment to supporting the British Army with world-class technology.

With the imminent deployment of the T4 bomb disposal robots, the British Army is poised to enhance its operational readiness and response capabilities, further strengthening national security and safeguarding communities from potential threats.
