Manchester City Legend Francis Lee Passes Away At 79

Former Manchester City and England striker Francis Lee, a revered figure in football history, has passed away at the age of 79. Lee’s prolific career saw him score 148 goals in 330 appearances during his eight-year tenure at City, contributing significantly to the club’s triumphs, including the old First Division title in 1968.

Lee’s impact extended beyond his playing days. Following his distinguished career on the pitch, he returned to Manchester City in 1994 as chairman, overseeing the club for four years. However, his later tenure faced challenges, leading to his resignation in 1998 amid the club’s relegation concerns.

The club’s statement described Lee as “a club legend in every sense” and “one of City’s all-time greats.” Flags around the Etihad Stadium and City Football Academy are flying at half-mast as a mark of respect.

Lee’s contributions were not confined to football; he made significant strides in the business world. His ventures included operations in the wastepaper and haulage business, followed by the creation of various household products, supplying major retailers in the UK. His company, F.H Lee, merged with Hazelwood Foods in 1985 and was eventually sold in 2000.

In 2016, Lee was recognised for his services to sport and charity with a CBE from the Duke of Cambridge. Fond tributes have poured in on social media, with former City striker Paul Dickov highlighting Lee’s “sheer love for the club” and ex-boxing world champion Ricky Hatton expressing admiration for Lee’s unwavering loyalty to Manchester City.

The football community mourns the loss of a true legend, as friends, former footballers, and pundits pay tribute to Francis Lee’s legacy, both on and off the pitch.
