Southport resident Michael McGrane, 61, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after being found guilty of rape and indecent assault. The sentencing took place at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday, November 13.
The investigation into McGrane began in January 2023 when detectives received a report of historic sex offences against a child. These offences were found to have occurred over a number of years.
Detective Inspector Rob Pritchard, who led the investigation, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. He said, “This sentence is the result of a thorough investigation aimed at ensuring that McGrane is held accountable for his utterly depraved actions.”
Pritchard also commended the victim for their bravery and determination in coming forward. He added, “Thanks to their courage, McGrane will now face a significant period of incarceration for his crimes.”
Merseyside Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting children from sexual abuse and apprehending those who seek to harm them. Pritchard urged anyone who has experienced any form of sexual abuse or has knowledge of such abuse to report it to the police.
He emphasised, “We take all reports of sexual abuse extremely seriously. If you find the strength to come forward, our specially trained officers will treat you with sensitivity and compassion.”
The impact of such heinous crimes on the victims is profound and long-lasting. Pritchard hopes that this sentence brings some comfort to the victim, knowing that they did the right thing by reporting McGrane’s crimes to the authorities.
