Following a retrial, Kyle Gordon, 24, of Enfield, has been convicted of the murder of 23-year-old Russell Jordan Jones in Enfield.

The conviction comes after a harrowing incident that took place on a cold night in March 2018. Gordon, along with others armed with a sawn-off shotgun and knives, embarked on a search for opposing gang members. However, their chosen targets were not affiliated with any gang; they were merely a group of young men chatting outside a shop.

Detective Sergeant Joanne Donoghue, from the Met’s Specialist Crime North Homicide Team, described the brutality of the attack as captured on CCTV, stating, “The wickedness and ferocity of the attack, which was captured on CCTV, shocked even the most seasoned of homicide detectives.

Gordon’s retrial at the Old Bailey resulted in his conviction on Monday, 11 March, for the murder of Russell Jordan Jones. He was also found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to a second victim and possession of a firearm.

The court heard that in the early hours of 17 March 2018, Russell and several friends were on South Street in Enfield when they were ambushed by a group of men wearing dark clothing and masks. In a sudden and brutal assault, Russell was stabbed and shot, leading to his tragic death. Another individual also sustained knife wounds during the attack.

Despite the exhaustive efforts of paramedics, Russell was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting a thorough investigation by detectives. The investigation involved meticulous analysis of hours of CCTV footage overlaid with mobile phone use by the suspects.

DS Donoghue acknowledged the enduring patience and dignity displayed by Russell’s family throughout the years of court proceedings. She expressed hope that the conviction brings them some measure of comfort, knowing that those responsible for Russell’s death have been held accountable.

Gordon is scheduled to be sentenced at the same court on Thursday, 14 March. Previously, two other individuals convicted of Russell’s murder in January 2019 received 29-year sentences, while a third individual convicted on 14 June 2023 was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 25 years.
