A collision on the M4 westbound in Wiltshire has led to the closure of the motorway between junction 16 (Swindon) and junction 17 (Chippenham).
The incident, which involved a single car leaving the carriageway, has prompted emergency services, including Wiltshire Police and National Highways Traffic Officers, to attend the scene.
As a result of the closure, motorists are advised to expect delays and plan alternative routes. Diversion routes have been put in place to guide drivers away from the affected area.
For vehicles over 14 feet 3 inches in height, a diversion route marked by a solid diamond symbol has been established. This route directs drivers to leave the M4 at junction 16 and take the A3102 towards Calne. From there, drivers will follow the A4 westbound to the A350 Chequers Roundabout, before rejoining the M4 at junction 17.
For vehicles under 14 feet 3 inches in height, an alternative diversion is available. This route also begins at junction 16, where drivers will take the A3102 towards Royal Wooton Bassett. From there, drivers will follow the B4042 to Malmesbury, before rejoining the M4 at junction 17.
Motorists are urged to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider delaying travel if possible. For up-to-date information, individuals can visit the National Highways website or contact the 24/7 contact centre at 0300 123 5000.
The closure serves as a reminder for drivers to remain vigilant on the roads and to drive safely, especially in adverse weather conditions or during periods of high traffic.
