London Marathon 2025: More Than 56,000 Take to the Streets in Record-Breaking Race

More than 56,000 runners flooded the streets of the capital today as the 2025 London Marathon set its sights on a new world record.

Organisers confirmed that the turnout could surpass the current world record for the largest marathon, which is held by the TCS New York City Marathon with 55,646 finishers in November 2023.

From elite athletes chasing glory to first-time marathoners running for personal causes, the energy along the 26.2-mile course was electric. Runners were cheered on by massive crowds lining the route from Greenwich to The Mall, in one of the most iconic events on the sporting calendar.

Hugh Brasher, Event Director of the London Marathon, said:

Today is a truly historic day for the London Marathon and for the global running community. To see over 56,000 people taking part is simply phenomenal and reflects the spirit, resilience, and passion of everyone involved.”

Elite races saw dramatic finishes, while fun runners raised millions for charities close to their hearts. Costumes ranged from superheroes and historical figures to elaborate novelty outfits, adding to the carnival atmosphere across the city.

Among the runners were celebrities, politicians, and everyday heroes who have trained for months for the prestigious event. Support stations, live music, and cheering crowds helped push runners toward the finish line despite unseasonably warm temperatures.

Full results are expected later tonight, with an official announcement on whether London has secured the new world record once all finishers are confirmed.

Regardless of the final tally, the 2025 London Marathon has already been hailed as a triumph for the city — celebrating human endurance, community spirit, and a shared passion for making a difference.
