In a harrowing incident that has left a Hackney neighbourhood in east London reeling, a four-year-old boy was found fatally stabbed in a terraced home on Montague Road. The Metropolitan Police were called to the scene on Wednesday night amid reports of the tragic event, where neighbours reported hearing screams as officers arrived.
The young victim, whose name has not been released, was rushed to the hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers during this difficult time.
A 41-year-old woman, known to the boy but not identified, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. The Metropolitan Police have launched a full investigation led by homicide detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command. Currently, officers are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.
A neighbour, a mother of three who lived next to the property and had known the boy since birth, described him as a “kind, happy child” who was often seen playing outside. She expressed her shock and grief recalling how even the responding police officers were visibly affected by the tragedy.
The crime scene has been cordoned off, with forensic officers conducting thorough investigations. Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley, expressed her devastation upon hearing the news and extended her deepest condolences to the child’s family. The council is working closely with the police and the child’s school to provide necessary support to those affected.
Detective Chief Superintendent James Conway, leading the police response in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, acknowledged the distressing nature of the incident and its profound impact on the local community. He assured that specialist officers are working diligently to unravel the circumstances leading to the young child’s death. Additional police presence will be seen in the area to offer reassurance to the community.
