Group of nurses trying to make a difference at QA Hospitial with the butterfly suite

A dedicated group of nurses in the Emergency Department at the QA in Cosham are trying to make a difference for patients and their relatives when they find themselves in the worst situation imaginable- losing a loved one. There is currently no dedicated bereavement area, but things are changing and finally, The group are building a dedicated area called the butterfly suite where our families can say goodbye to their loved ones in a peaceful, dignified area. Nurses who work in the hospital are raising money to furnish the room in such a way that it will provide a comfortable ‘home-from-home’ environment. The name has been chosen for the new suite ‘Butterfly Suite’, as the butterfly is a sign of the transition from an old life to a new life. The group have already tried to improve the bereavement process by placing butterflies in areas where a person has passed away to maintain calm and dignity. One of our nurses in the department introduced this and won a National award in 2011. The scheme is now used in NHS hospitals nationwide.
