The family of a teenage girl tragically killed in Croydon has paid heartfelt tribute to their beloved daughter as investigators work diligently to unravel the circumstances surrounding her untimely death.
Elianne Andam, a 15-year-old on her way to school, was attacked on Wellesley Road at approximately 08:30 on Wednesday, September 27. Swift action by law enforcement saw officers arriving at the scene within just two minutes of receiving the distressing call. Collaborating with emergency service colleagues, they provided immediate first aid to the young girl. However, despite their dedicated efforts, Elianne sadly passed away at the scene.
In a poignant statement, a spokesperson for Elianne’s family expressed the profound grief they are experiencing: “Our hearts are broken by the senseless death of our daughter. Elianne was the light of our lives. She was bright and funny, with many friends who all adored her. She was only 15, and had her whole life ahead of her, with hopes and dreams for the future. All those dreams have now been shattered. Our lives have fallen apart, along with that of our wider family. We ask the media to please respect our privacy as we try to grieve the short life of our beautiful child.”
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command are tirelessly investigating the circumstances surrounding Elianne’s tragic death. Within a remarkable 75 minutes of the incident, a 17-year-old boy was apprehended in New Addington on suspicion of murder. His custody has been extended by 12 hours, and he remains in police custody at a south London station.
Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Woodsford, leading the investigation, extended her sympathies to Elianne’s family and emphasised the dedication of her team in supporting them during this deeply distressing time. She stated, “Our investigation continues, and we are making good progress. We have recovered CCTV from the area and have spoken to a number of witnesses. Forensic scientists have also examined the scene.”
From their inquiries, investigators have concluded that the attack on Elianne occurred outside on Wellesley Road, near a bus stop, rather than on board the bus. Detective Chief Inspector Woodsford urged witnesses who may have seen the attack to come forward, acknowledging the distressing and traumatic nature of the incident. She emphasised that anyone needing support should contact the authorities, assuring them that assistance will be provided.
Elianne’s tragic death has deeply affected the community of Croydon, and Detective Chief Inspector Woodsford expressed her gratitude for the support and patience shown by the people of the town during the investigative process.
A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Thursday, September 28, which may shed further light on the circumstances of Elianne’s death. The investigation team is also working to establish the exact relationship between the victim and the suspect, who was known to her.
Witnesses or individuals with information pertaining to the incident are urged to contact the police at 101, quoting CAD 1601/27Sep. Information, images, and video evidence can also be shared directly with the investigation team to aid in their ongoing efforts to uncover the truth behind this tragic event.
