The family of 20-year-old Emily Sherwin, who went missing during a diving excursion near Old Harry Rocks off Swanage, has released a heartfelt statement following extensive search efforts.
Emily, a resident of Poole, was reported missing on the evening of July 23, 2024, after she failed to surface from a dive. Despite relentless efforts by HM Coastguard, the RNLI, and a specialized police dive team from Avon and Somerset Police, Emily has not been found.
Her family expressed their deep sorrow, stating: “We are heartbroken at the loss of Emily, but eternally grateful for the 20 wonderful years we had with her, and finding comfort in the fact that she was doing something she loved.
Emily, described as high-spirited, outgoing, and passionate about marine conservation, had a profound love for the sea which extended to sailing and diving. “Emily was unique: loving and loyal. She lit up every room,” the family added.
The family also extended their gratitude to the emergency teams and community members who participated in the search: “We would like to thank all involved in the attempts to find Emily: the RNLI and coastguard teams, the police divers and all at Parkstone Yacht Club who took over 30 boats to join the search.
Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Vallins of Dorset Police commented on the search efforts: “With our partner agencies we have carried out extensive searches…but unfortunately we have been unable to locate her at this time.
The underwater search has been discontinued following expert consultations, though police will continue to explore all avenues to find Emily. The community and emergency responders have been thanked for their tireless contributions.
The Sherwin family remains hopeful, stating: “The search operation was a testimony to the impact she had upon everyone she met and the love we all share for her. We will miss her forever.
Dorset Police encourage anyone with information about Emily’s disappearance to come forward and assist in ongoing investigations.
