Eight Injured in Rochester Hills Splash Pad Shooting, Suspect Dies by Suicide

A tragic shooting at a splash pad in a Detroit suburb left eight people injured, including at least two children, on Saturday afternoon. Authorities have confirmed that the suspect, who opened fire in the midst of families enjoying a summer day, later died by suicide.

The incident unfolded just after 5 p.m. at a city park in Rochester Hills, where a splash pad serves as a recreational area with water sprays and fountains designed for safe play. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard reported that the shooter arrived by car walked to the splash pad, and began firing indiscriminately, discharging as many as 28 rounds and stopping multiple times to reload.

Initial reports suggested that up to 10 people might have been wounded, but subsequent checks with area hospitals confirmed that the number of gunshot victims was eight.

Law enforcement swiftly tracked the suspect to a nearby home. The situation was contained, and the residence was surrounded by police. Later on Saturday night, Rochester police announced that the suspect had taken their own life.

A handgun and three empty magazines were recovered from the scene of the shooting. The motive for the attack remains unclear, but it appeared to be a random act of violence.

Sheriff Bouchard expressed his dismay at the senseless violence, noting the profound impact on the community. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to gather more information and provide support to the victims and their families.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any additional information that might aid in the investigation. The community of Rochester Hills is coming together to support those affected by this devastating event.
