A police dog from Dorset, named PD Jeff, along with his handler PC Hillier, is among four canines from the South West of England that have been deployed to Paris to assist in the security arrangements for the upcoming Olympic Games.
The deployment also includes PD Roo from Devon and PD EmmyLou and PD Hope from Avon and Somerset. This international mission is part of a large-scale security operation involving policing and military teams from around the globe, tasked with securing the Olympic Village and event venues ahead of the games, which begin next Friday, July 26.
PC Hillier, reflecting on their experience, said, “PD Jeff worked closely with the Gendarmerie, quickly becoming an integral part of their team. Despite the long days, he thrived, utilizing his remarkable sniffing abilities to the fullest.”
The 33rd Olympic Games, set to officially open on July 26, marks the third time Paris has hosted the event, making it the second city ever to do so. The event has called for unprecedented international cooperation to ensure safety and security.
The British contingent, including PD Jeff and his fellow canines, were later honoured at the British Embassy, where they met with embassy staff and the Ambassador. The visit served to acknowledge their contributions and thank them for representing British policing on an international stage.
PC Hillier added, “The experience was not only a tremendous honour but also an unforgettable opportunity to create lifelong memories, showcasing the best of Britain and Dorset Police. It’s quite an achievement, especially for a rescue dog like PD Jeff.”
Assistant Chief Constable Mark Callaghan of Dorset Police expressed pride in the team’s contributions: “We were proud to support the security operation in advance of the Olympics and play our part in ensuring a safe and secure event on a world stage. Well done to all involved.”
