A British serviceman is fighting for his life after a terrifying knife attack occurred close to Brompton Barracks in Chatham, Kent, late Tuesday afternoon. The incident, which is reminiscent of the brutal murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in 2013, has shocked the local community and raised alarms over the security of military personnel.

At approximately 6:00 PM on July 23, the serviceman, in his 40s, was ambushed less than 200 meters from the barracks. A masked assailant, described as wearing a NASA bomber jacket and riding a red moped, launched a frenzied knife attack, stabbing the soldier over 70 times with two kitchen knives. Witnesses reported a horrifying scene where the attacker licked the blood off the knife in a grotesque display of violence.

The soldier was quickly attended to by horrified onlookers who attempted to provide first aid until emergency services arrived. He was airlifted to a hospital where he remains in a serious condition, conscious and able to talk, but his injuries are grave.

Authorities responded promptly, with Kent Police arresting a 24-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder shortly after the incident. The suspect was also reportedly targeting military personnel specifically, which has led to increased security measures around the barracks and local areas typically frequented by servicemen and women.

The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, but the method and target have drawn parallels to the attack on Lee Rigby, stirring up painful memories for the community and the nation. The police have not ruled out terrorism, and the investigation is being closely monitored by national security agencies.

In response to the attack, an Army spokesperson expressed deep concern for the injured soldier and emphasized the importance of community support during the investigation. Kent Police have cordoned off the area near Sally Port Gardens, where the incident occurred, and are conducting a thorough investigation with a significant police presence expected to continue in the area.
