Arson Attacks on French Railways Disrupt Paris Olympics

Vandalism has struck the heart of France’s transportation infrastructure with multiple arson attacks on the high-speed train network, causing significant disruptions just as the Paris Olympics opening ceremony gets underway.

The SNCF, France’s state-owned railway operator, reported that installations along the crucial lines that connect Paris to the west, north, and east of the country were targeted overnight. These deliberate acts of vandalism have led to severe impacts on rail services, expected to last throughout the weekend.

In an official statement, the SNCF revealed, “Last night, our network suffered several acts of vandalism, particularly fires set intentionally to damage our installations on the Atlantic, Northern, and Eastern high-speed lines.

France’s Sports Minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, expressed her dismay at the attacks, condemning them as “coordinated sabotage” aimed directly at the Olympic Games. “It’s completely appalling,” she stated. To target the games is to target France itself.

The minister warned that the repercussions of these attacks would extend beyond just the opening day, likely affecting the entire weekend’s events and schedules.

This development poses a significant challenge for event organizers and could potentially disrupt the travel plans of thousands of spectators and participants heading to the games.

The authorities are investigating the incidents, and further updates are expected as they work to restore full service and ensure the safety of the rail network amidst the ongoing Olympic festivities.
