A Lone, Masked Gunman Is Said To Have Shot The Victim In The Leg

Detectives from Strand Road in Derry/Londonderry are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information in connection with a shooting in the city last night, Monday, January 23rd.
A man in his thirties was shot in the lower leg shortly after 9pm in a wooded area near commercial properties on Whitehouse Road and the Coshquin Road junction.
A lone, masked gunman is said to have shot the victim in the leg. Northern Ireland Ambulance Service transported the victim to the hospital. He is still in the hospital this morning.
A police cordon remains in place at the intersection of Coshquin Road and Whitehouse Road.
“Our investigation is in its early stages,” said Detective Inspector Lavery of the Strand Road Criminal Investigation Branch. We’d also like to hear from drivers who had dashcams and were in the area at the time to see if they caught the gunman.”
“The shooting we witnessed last night is a clear human rights violation, and the injuries inflicted on the victim are a stark violation of people’s basic human rights,” Detective Inspector Lavery added. This attack will leave physical and psychological scars as well as trauma that may never heal. Nothing good ever comes from this.” These attacks endanger not only the victims, but also the local community. People should be able to feel safe in their own homes. Nobody has the authority to take that away from anyone. This violence has no justification, and paramedics, nurses, doctors, and all other NHS and care workers must be allowed to devote their full attention to treating and saving people in need.
Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and reference 2026 of January 23, 2019. Anonymous tips can also be left by calling the independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111 or submit an anonymous tip online at http:///crimestoppers-uk.org.
