A Metropolitan Police officer has been sacked without notice after a disturbing string of misogynistic, ableist, and violent messages sent in a private WhatsApp group came to light, including comments about lying in court, making rape jokes, and abusing police powers.
PC Niall Bowler, previously based within the Met, was dismissed following a disciplinary hearing that exposed a catalogue of offensive, discriminatory, and unethical comments shared with colleagues over an extended period.
In the messages, PC Bowler made vile jokes about sexual violence, insulted disabled individuals, glorified police misconduct, and mocked victims of high-profile tragedies.
Shocking Messages and Abusive Content
Among the most appalling content uncovered were jokes about sexually abusing his younger brother, in which Bowler said he was “five fingers deep” and joked with another officer about wanting to “arse rape him dry.” He also made threats and cruel remarks about colleagues, writing that he hoped one officer “just stops eating altogether and dies.”
He frequently used ableist and misogynistic slurs, referring to people as “fking spaz”, “fking r****d”, “ugly mental hags”, and “big mouth frog ct”. Bowler also joked about choosing not to arrest a suspect, whom he called a “mental bch”, so he could “bugger off before midday.
In one message about giving evidence in court, he appeared to suggest lying on the stand: “We’ll just have to talk sh* in the box. Say they’re innocent. Get it thrown out.”*
Bowler also shared a Met Police press release about a pay rise with the caption: “Even more free money. For being a bunch of nonces and murderers.”
Abuse of Power Allegations
In further messages, Bowler claimed that a senior officer had instructed the illegal retention and download of a suspect’s phone, even after no further action had been taken on drug supply charges. He accused another officer of routinely lying in remand applications and branded the conduct as “going rogue to get results.”
Referring to the situation, he said: “Good job [REDACTED], you’re using the same argument as the Nazis.”
Disrespect for Tragedy and Public Figures
Bowler’s messages also included sick jokes about footballer Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane crash in 2019. While criticising England captain Harry Kane during the World Cup, he said: “Big mouth frog c**t. Hopefully dies in a crash like Sala.” He also described then-England manager Gareth Southgate as a “dumb mg ct.”
Official Response from the Met
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine, who chaired the misconduct panel, condemned the messages, stating:
“The language used was consciously discriminatory over a considerable period of time, showing a concerning pattern. The threats of violence and the joking regarding serious sexual violence are particularly concerning.”
He concluded that PC Bowler’s behaviour caused serious reputational harm to the force and contributed to the erosion of public trust.
Scotland Yard’s Ongoing Scrutiny
This latest case comes as the Met continues its crackdown on toxic culture and discriminatory behaviour within its ranks, following multiple high-profile scandals involving officers in recent years.
Public confidence in the Met has been significantly damaged, and this revelation will likely fuel ongoing calls for systemic reform, stronger oversight, and more rigorous vetting procedures within UK policing.
Anyone with concerns about police conduct can contact the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) or use the Met’s dedicated complaints channels.
