Skelton Defibrillator Thefts Spark Outrage as Police Hunt Suspect

A wave of thefts has shocked the town of Skelton, North Yorkshire, after two vital defibrillators were stolen from community buildings on the same evening. Cleveland Police are now urgently appealing for public help to identify the suspect behind the crimes.

What Happened in Skelton?

Theft at Skelton Civic Centre

At approximately 8:35 PM on Monday, 9 June 2025, a defibrillator was forcibly removed from its cabinet outside Skelton Civic Centre on Coniston Road. The device, valued at several thousand pounds, was stolen after its protective box was smashed open.

Second Theft at Skelton Methodist Church

Shortly after the first incident, a second defibrillator was stolen from Skelton Methodist Church in Skelton Green. The coordinated timing and similarity in method suggest a targeted effort to steal these life-saving medical devices.

Why This Matters

Defibrillators are critical emergency tools designed to restore normal heart rhythm in cases of sudden cardiac arrest. Their theft could endanger lives, especially in rural communities like Skelton, where rapid emergency response is essential.

“These thefts are not just criminal—they’re dangerous,” a local councillor told The Sentinel Current. “They put lives at risk and undermine the sense of safety our town has built.”

Who Are Police Looking For?

Cleveland Police have released a suspect description:

  • White male, aged 20–35

  • Large build

  • Wearing a grey top, black bottoms, black cap, and white trainers

Officers have conducted CCTV reviews at both sites and are pursuing additional leads, but no arrests have yet been made.
