In a tragic crash that occurred on the A1060 in Roxwell, Essex on September 23, 2021. The 38-year-old driver was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving at an earlier trial and was also banned from driving for five years

During the trial, it was revealed that Harrison was “vulnerable to falling asleep” on familiar roads and slept only five to six hours a night, relying on “strong doses of caffeine” to carry out his job as a lorry driver. The investigation into his sleep history indicated that he was prone to dozing off in monotonous situations, such as driving on a familiar road.

The crash resulted in the death of 41-year-old PC Tris Baker, who served as a children and young person officer based in Brentwood. The tragedy has left a deep impact on his family, colleagues, and the community he served.

Inspector Mark Fraser, who led the investigation, expressed his condolences, stating that PC Baker was “a much-loved family man and colleague” and is dearly missed by those who knew him. He further conveyed his thoughts to the officer’s partner, Faye, and his family during this difficult time.

Fraser highlighted the avoidable nature of the incident, attributing it to Harrison’s reckless actions that had devastating consequences. He emphasized that no sentence could undo the tragedy, but he hoped that the seven-year prison term would bring some measure of comfort to those close to PC Baker.

A lorry driver who was “vulnerable to falling asleep” on familiar roads has been jailed for seven years for killing an off-duty police officer in a crash.
